This is the school that my mom and her brother and sisters went to when they were kids. I think it was grades 1-8.
And actually I believe my great aunt Gladys Caldie also taught here. Now it is less than a mile away from where Lisa, Tim and Tanner live. Sure wish I could afford to buy and restore it.

Boating on the Mishagamie
I am not sure I spelled it right but that is how the name of this lake sounds. It is full of fishing holes and Tim and Tanner probably know all of them. I made a much appreciated find on this little spin around the lake; an anchor that someone else had lost. We were able to pull it up out of the muck and sand and I am sure Tim will find a use for it.
Tanner & Jesse
I think Jesse is the cutest yet kind of funny looking dog (I mean that in a nice way
Lisa)

Tanner Reads!
It was so much fun to look through all of the work that Tanner had saved from kindergarten. But the 'icing on the cake' was having him read for me. He sure is well prepared for first grade.

Sela and Kelby
All around Madison it's 'Cows on Parade' and they really are colorful and creative. I liked them better than the pigs that Seattle had on their streets a few years back.
The Fossum Family
Eating a much deserved snack on the Madison capital square green. It was hotter than blazes and we walked all around the square and then some. Kelby and Sela didn't complain a bit, so it was kind of hard for us adults to do any whining but it was HOT!

Go Cart Injury
This was the reason for the 3:30 am phone call from one of the chapperones at the 'safe and sane' graduation party. Anna Rae had crashed a go cart into a wall and the kid behind her crashed into her. Her leg made impact with something on the steering column causing this ragged, mean wound.
They called the medics and she ended up at Harborview Medical Center (one of the best trauma centers in the country). Chris met them at the hospital. He really does handle this type of thing better. Needless to say even though I did not go along, I did not sleep a wink and I think we called each other 4 times before they came home at 7:30. It took the surgeons 2 hours to stich her up. They did invisible stitches under the surface and then some fancy new stitches on top and they actually had to 'trim' away jagged skin to close up the top. Today, 6/28,
she had the stitches taken out but it still looks none too pretty. This graduation day memory, along with scar, is never going to fade. It also is a Father's Day memory that will stay with Chris forever.

Celebrating at the House
Once back from the island we had a barbecue/celebration at our house to honor Anna Rae. About 15 people were able to attend and that was really plenty to over flow from our dining room and onto the deck. It turned out to be lovely weather for a graduation, surprising everyone; it had started out somewhat cloudy.
Anna Rae truly felt like the guest of honor and I would say that it was perfect from beginning to end but then we got that 3:30 am phone call on Sunday!

Grace and Anna Rae
On graduation day we were invited to 2 brunches. One was in honor of Grace, pictured here with Anna Rae. I would've loved to take dozens of pictures of the grounds and the view from this home
but that probably would've been tacky since we were there to honor the graduates. and aren't these 2 lovely? I think Anna Rae chose a beautiful dress. Unfortunately the underarm seams in the gossamer fabric didn't even hold out the morning. She was fine as long as she kept her arms down, but that is not too practical. So today she took the dress back to Anthroploogie and they were very apologetic and gave her her money back...which really didn't disappoint her too much since it was a big chunk of change!

Beautiful!
She sure 'makes up' pretty, dontcha think? The Dior make up clinician at Macy's did a great job of covering up the curling iron burn made by the beautician.
Yes, a burn, needless to say she didn't leave a tip.

Tartiflette
This potatoe and cheese dish is a winter speciality from Haute Savoie, the area of France where Anna Rae lived last year. It is made from a cheese called Roblechone (I may have spelled it wrong) and it is delicious!
Perchik and Hodel
Taken after VHS performance of Fiddler on the Roof. Her singing was lovely, in case you wondered!
Rejection and Acceptance
Well, all the envelopes have arrived; both the thin ones and the thick ones. On the most memorable day she called me at work just as my young students were transitioning from 'Quiet Time' to Math. "Mom, I didn't get into Northwestern. Oh well." This stated without a hello and delivered in a flat tone. "Oh honey, I'm so sorry. You are still waiting to hear from 3 more colleges." I hang onto the silence at the other end, wishing I were there to give her a hug and wanting so much to know the right thing to say but also well aware that 25 kindergarteners are going to have something totally different from math on their agenda if I don't hang up soon. It's awkward and incomplete as I promise to call as soon as the kids are dismissed. The bell hardly rings and she calls again, is she crying, or is that laughing? "They want me mom! They want ME!" "Anna Rae, WHO wants you?" I ask in confusion. "The University of Chicago! This is SO worth it! So worth all the hard work of keeping my grades up!" and she's laughing victoriously. It's incredible, wonderful and totally deserved I say as I congratulate her. I try on this first day of getting the 'big news' not to be too practical or suggest she maybe consider less pricey options like the U of W here in Seattle or Gonzaga in Spokane; both place which also accepted her. Well, in following days we get their financial aid package and it is generous but The University of Chicago is VERY expensive and they expect the parent contribution to be twice what we consider tolerable. But we have raised her to aim high and this certainly is high! Take a look at University of Chicago website and see for yourself. We are VERY proud of her but those of you who know me very well know that I am a bit anxious for her too; anxious for the debt she may be incurring as she makes her scholarly ambitions come true. She is excited to be in another big city and in a top notch academic environment, not to mention how very happy she is to be near her Wisconsin relatives (That makes me happy too!)
I am just glad that she didn't choose to attend the Freshman Year in Florence program through NYU; that was another incredible acceptance letter she recieved. It was a totally unexpected offer; she had applied for the College of Arts and Sciences but they thought she was better matched to the general studies program in Florence (Yes, that is Italy!)
This has to be my 'big brag post' of the year. Although I think Chris and I deserve some bragging rights please do send your congratulations on to Anna Rae as she certainly deserves them!

Dirty Car
This is what the car looked like by time we returned to Seattle. It is also one of the things I DON'T like about snow; it is so messy on the roads when it starts melting.
Me on the Methow Community Trail
Don't I look happy? What I did not know at the time was how sunburned I was getting.
Deer At a Bird Feeder
Deer were like vermin all over Winthrop. The deer were having a great time here, eating seed from a bird feeder. There was a dog inside the cabin going just bonkers barking at them and they did not so much as look his way.
Tranquility
Some time back we dropped our camera and the shutter doesn't totally close anymore and when it opens you need to push the sides open by hand. On more than one of these pictures it looks like I forgot to push open the shutter. oops!
Irrigation
I can't believe how long it has been since I last posted anything! This series of snow pictures is from the trip Chris and I made to the Methow Valley over midwinter break. It was the most fabulous cross country skiing experience I have ever had. I skiied 24 miles in one day. Needless to say I was exhausted (and sunburned) at the end of the day. We stayed at the Chewich Inn which is a wonderful bed and breakfast with scones 'to die for'.

GO SEAHAWKS!
Here is my darling kindergarten class in their Seahawk headbands. Look at the second little boy from the left, front row. Very hawk-like, isn't he?
Laura Unveiling the bottles
Here's Laura reading the comments we wrote about the wines we tasted. January was a Petite Sirah tasting. Fluer 2003 from California was the favorite of the group.
Ironically there were only three wines represented out of six bottles. That made
for some funny reactions at the unveiling!

Snow Pig
I cross country skied at Iron Horse State Park. It is nice and flat and the trail goes along a lake. It is just my speed. I had to ski about 3 miles from the parking lot before it was truly tranquil. This cute pig is someone else's creation that I saw along the trail.
the Summit at Snoqualmie 1-2006
As you can see, the snow was lovely but it was just as gray as it was in Seattle.
This was Jan. 22nd I believe. They turned the lights on at Snoqualmie Central at 2:30 because it was so foggy.

Our Tree 2005
It was by far the most expensive tree we've ever bought but it sure was lovely and it held it's needles for 3 whole weeks. I took it down in bits and pieces during the first week of January. I was sad to see it go. I bought new candles for the mantle to try and replace some of the warmth/light that the tree gave to the room.

Haircut!
Although I think this photo is not the best (Anna Rae took it of herself) I must say I definitely like her new, shorter haircut...and I think she does too.
Sitting Down to a Sumptious Christmas Dinner
The Kornowskes hosted another fabulous holiday meal followed by a LONG game of dominoes, which Anna Rae won. I can't begin to tell you how stuffed we all were
when we finally pulled away from this table!

Christmas Morning
Here she sits in the midst of Christmas wrapping paper and ribbons as she figures out the workings of her ipod dock/radio.

Christmas Eve
She never seems this short to me. I am always surprised to see the height difference between us as in photos like this.
Emilien and Anna Rae Visit Sanislo
Since Anna Rae's school had early dismissal she brought Emilien to Sanislo to visit me and my kindergarten class during lunch. I had the children practice saying Bon Jour! But when the teen aged guests arrived, the kindergarteners became mute with shyness. Emilien liked Sanislo, especially our gym. When I was able to release myself from the kindergarten I found Emilien in the gym juggling pins and feeling quite 'at home'. Turns out that his dad (a teacher of 9 and 10 year olds) teaches juggling along with reading, writing, etc. in a classroom in France.
At Our Dining Room Table
On Dec. 3rd Emilien, an exchange student and friend of Anna Rae's from Annecy, visited us in Seattle. He is on exchange in Summerland, British Columbia. Emilien stayed with us for 3 days, going to school with Anna Rae on the ferry, attending a school dance with her, and touring downtown on the weekend. The pitcher that Anna Rae is holding is one of the 'treasures' I brought back from France. Every family table I ate at in France had a similar earthenware pitcher filled with water on the table at mealtimes.
